What i think abstraction is
I think abstraction is creating unusual images using photoshop or real cameras and try disrupt the picture in a way.
Definition of abstract
Abstract photography, sometimes called non-objective, experimental, conceptual or concrete photography, is a means of depicting a visual image that does not have an immediate association with the object world and that has been created through the use of photographic equipment, processes or materials.

The formal elements
Focus:
Light: Line: Repetition: Shape: Space: Texture: Value/Tone: |
Which areas appear clearest or sharpest in the photograph? Which do not?
Which areas of the photograph are brightest? Are there any shadows? Does the photograph allow you to guess the time of day? Is the light natural or artificial? Harsh or soft? Reflected or direct? Are there objects in the photograph that act as lines? Are they straight, curvy, thin, thick? Do the lines create direction in the photograph? Do they outline? Do the lines show movement or energy? Are there any objects, shapes or lines which repeat and create a pattern? Do you see geometric (straight edged) or organic (curvy) shapes? Which are they? Is there depth to the photograph or does it seem shallow? What creates this appearance? Are there important negative (empty) spaces in addition to positive (solid) spaces? Is there depth created by spatial illusions i.e. perspective? If you could touch the surface of the photograph how would it feel? How do the objects in the picture look like they would feel? Is there a range of tones from dark to light? Where is the darkest value? Where is the lightest? |
Shapes
Everyone of these pictures i took have some sort of shape in them wether its circles or squares or diamonds.
Photograms
What is a photogram?
A photogram is a picture that is produced using light sensitive paper without the use of a camera.
From this chart we can see that the use of the word photogram shot up in the early 1900's when they were started to be made by photographers such as Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy and György Kepes. Photogram was also known as Camera-less photography. It is quite an easy process to make a photogram if you have the right equipment.
These are examples of photograms
My favourite photogram
This photogram is by Emmanuel Radnitzky (Man Ray) and was made in 1926. Emmanuel Radnitzky was a Russian who grew up in Philadelphia. He was a painter and photographer but he also made sculptures and films. This was one of his photograms. I like this one because it is unusual. There is an object that looks like a swirl but there are shadows obstructing the swirl and a giant dot in the middle. This picture caught my eye straight away. I think he arranged It because it looks like they're attached.

How do you make a photogram?
You need three things objects, A photographic enlarger and light sensitive paper. Once the photographic enlarger is all ready you need to put the light sensitive paper underneath without the enlarger on. Put whatever objects you wish on the light sensitive paper and then your ready turn on the photographic enlarger for 8 seconds . After 8 seconds are up put the light sensitive paper in the develop solution and leave it in there for approximately one minute after that you put the paper in the stop solution for about 10 seconds then put it in the fix solution for about five minutes then wash the chemicals off and hang them up to dry.
This is the original picture i created using obejcts and a light. i had three go's of making these photograms before i made this one

I put a copy of the photogram in photoshop and changed the colours to make it look like this. i also added a photo underneath of the school which i took with a pinhole camera.

In this lesson we attempted to recreate Saul Leiter's photographs by painting them.
There is a lot of repetition with a oval shape, the sticker on the car window and the umbrellas. The car window saul lieter is looking out of has acted as a view finder, the object thats in focus is the yellow car. The image is well balanced because the ovals are evenly spaced out throughout the image. The line seperating the two windows works as the rule of thirds.
Experements with view finders
Today i experemented with view finders, this is how it went
I will be focusing on the formal element of focus and light pattern. i am researching and taking photos like Uta Barth
Uta Barth focuses on shadows alot, in the first photo it looks like she has somehow disrupted the view.
By altering the flash settings on the camera i have managed to take this photo in a Uta Barth shadowy way, how i acheived this photograph is by altering the flash settings to :
Flash Exp Comp +1
Red Eye Correction off
Red eye lamp on
Saftey FE on

Analising
I went out to take some pictures and heres some of my favourite
I used reflection alot and played around with the focus alot aswell.
I like this photo alot because i focused on the tree and there is alot in the background such as the school buildings, windows and a railing.
Photoshop
I used photoshop to merge two photos together this was the outcome
Final evaluation
In my final piece i picked a photo that i took and merged in photoshop, then i got someone to stand infront of the photo resulting in this
Then i merged these two.
To make this
Here is the final piece
20/9/2019
